This special edition of Project Management for AEC Professionals delivers two high-impact sessions that highlight the key skills and differentiators that take take good Project Managers and make them great! This typical four-week session is led by a panel of three experts backed by a ton of research on how to best train project managers to be more effective and efficient. 

Session 1: the staggering costs of an untrained project manager. Every year, thousands of students enter AEC industry workforce with varying levels of technical skill; however, these students routinely demonstrate overwhelmingly underdeveloped project management skills. As these AEC professionals climb the corporate ladder, they can cost their organization substantial amounts of time and money. These costs can not only be associated with poor time management and inefficient communication, but also are impacted by poor project flow, redoing work, micromanaging, poor conflict resolution, lack of awareness of budget and budgeted time, among others. This presentation covers both the overt and subtle costs of an untrained project manager with a specific focus on the project management engine: time and task management; and communication. We will bust some time management myths, learn how to properly prioritize and delegate work, and how to communicate in a way that ensures your message is understood as you intended. This ensures clarity, avoids rework, and keeps the Project Management engine humming.

Session 2: transitioning from project manager to project leadership. Under typical situations, there are a few common skills that appear to be critical for effective project management. However, as projects become more complex, the application of these skills must be dynamic. The ability to flexibly apply the core Project Management skills to the dynamic project environment is a core component of project leadership. Project managers growing as project leaders must have self, social, relationship, project, and generally more comprehensive awareness, understand how their leadership style could help or hinder them in certain situations, and be able to problem solve and negotiate in an efficient and effective way. This session will provide an overview of a few critical pieces in the transition from project manager to leader, with a primary focus on building successful teams, capturing and implementing lessons learned, and resolving conflict in a way that creates win-win scenarios.
